5 Signs Your Business Admin Is Taking Up Too Much of Your Time

Small business admin can quickly creep into your evenings, create backlogs and take you away from the work that actually matters.

Running a small business comes with admin. There's no getting around it.

But there's a difference between doing some admin and feeling as though you're constantly trying to catch up with it.

Often, it isn't one huge task causing the problem. It's the dozens of little ones.

The email you need to reply to. The document you haven't finished. The spreadsheet that needs updating. The files you'll definitely organise "when you get a minute".

Sound familiar?

Here are five signs that your admin might be taking up more of your time than it should.

1. You're doing it in the evenings

You've finished the actual work for the day...

...and then you remember the admin.

So the laptop comes back out.

If you're regularly using your evenings to catch up on jobs you couldn't get to during the day, it might be time to look at what somebody else could take over.

2. Small jobs keep getting pushed to tomorrow

None of them seem particularly urgent on their own.

So they get moved to tomorrow.

And then the next day.

And suddenly you have a backlog that feels much bigger than the individual jobs ever did.

Having someone regularly work through those smaller tasks can stop them building up in the first place.

3. You're keeping too much in your head

"I'll remember that."

Until you don't.

When you're trying to remember who needs a reply, what needs updating, which document you were working on, and what you promised to do next Tuesday, it's exhausting.

Good admin isn't just about making things look tidy. It's about creating systems that mean you don't have to carry everything around in your head.

4. Your business is busy, but you're spending too little time on the work that actually earns you money

Admin is necessary.

But most small business owners have things only they can do.

If routine admin is taking you away from clients, customers or the work your business actually exists to provide, outsourcing some of it could make much better use of your time.

5. You keep thinking, "I really need to sort that"

Your inbox.

Your filing system.

That spreadsheet.

The folder on your desktop full of documents you're going to organise one day.

We all have jobs we put off.

But if your list of "I really need to sort that" jobs is getting longer rather than shorter, you don't necessarily need to find more time.

You might just need another pair of hands.

You don't have to hand everything over

Getting admin support doesn't mean losing control of your business.

It can simply mean choosing the jobs that don't need to be done by you and letting somebody else take care of them.

Maybe that's a couple of hours of support.

Maybe it's tackling a backlog.

Maybe it's finally sorting the system that's been driving you mad for six months.

The aim isn't to take over your business.

It's to give you a little more space to actually run it.
